How do trials work in Israel? We don't have jury trials, fortunately. Dealing with everyone having to do reserve duty in the military up to 40 days a year is difficult enough (mothers don't serve however). Funding for military service is through social security so those serving receive their usual salary, but employers have a hard time of it.

Jury Duty cost me a fortune, professionally, educationally, and personally. I can honestly say I'm glad I did it, although at the time it was probably way too scary for me to handle (the guy on trial was SOOOO guilty and SUCH a scumbag, dealt in child porn and we had to sit through hours of watching the porn). We found the guy *very* guilty and he's still in prison, with a life sentence and no chance of parole for 30 years. Jury duty is not something to be shirked. Our system of justice only works if people like us are willing to serve on jurys. I don't know about you, but if I were on trail, I would not want a bunch of lunkheads deciding my fate. I'd want educated, thinking people on my jury, which is why I served in the first place. Wow, so people can literally go bankrupt performing their civic duty? especially if they have their own business with nobody to cover for them, for instance. I don't disagree with the principle behind jury trials, nor with the principle that one does not shirk ones duties, but it does sound like the burden placed on citizens performing these duties could be lightened, especially in a highly litigious society like the US.

If we had a better judicial system, there would be hired jurors, whose JOB it was to sit around day after day waiting to be called. But then, they'd have to be paid a livable wage, which currently jurors are not. Those would be judges. And yes, many legal systems do have professional, educated and handsomely paid judges who decide trials. It's a legitimate alternative to jury trials, and it is conceivable to make such a change in the system, so I agree with whoever said if that's what you want, do your civic duty and campaign for the change.

In the 3rd trimester all sorts of physical problems can manifest. I suggest that if you have anything even remotely resembling a backache at that time, you get a really detailed letter from your doctor detailing your need for ergonomic seating, your need to get up and walk about every certain number of minutes, and any other need you might have. The judge might just say not worth the effort and send you home. LOL, I've had a backache since I was 9 weeks pregnant. No problem there. I probably will ask my midwife about it at my next appointment, just because it would require me to be driving a car for about 2.5 hours per day and when we went home over Easter, I was very uncomfortable sitting in the car that long even then. I'll be 2 months further along when this comes, than I was then, so even though it will be broken up (albeit by *sitting* in the courthouse all day), it still seems like more than I want to do. Failing that, let those lawyers know how you feel when they screen the jurors. You are incredibly uncomfortable, and worried sick about your child. Anyone, is there any way this might backfire?

I followed their instructions for requesting an excusal, and faxed a letter stating both that I am a sole carer *and* will be third-trimester pregnant at the time, but the request was denied. Did you also fax the copies of serving 2 times prior in the past 4 years? Once you serve, you are suppose to be excused from any jury duty for the following 5 years. And here you are allowed off if your child is under 12 and you are the primary care taker (fax copies of birth certificates). Valerie co-moderator, soc.support.pregnancy.loss
